Tua Tagovailoa has been taking the NFL by storm this year. Some say he is a dark horse MVP candidate some say he is a product of the system and the receivers he has. Either way the NLF world has an oppinion on Tua but honestly how good is he?
When Tyreek Hill was traded to the Miami Dolphins people were cautious about calling the Dolphins Super Bowl contenders because they didn't believe in Tua. Coming into this season Tua was known as an undersized, injury proned QB who many experts thought the addition of Tyreek Hill wouldn't matter because they didn't think Tua had the arm strength too get him the ball. And too be honest I was a skeptic as well. I didn't think Tua was that good. Boy was I wrong. Tua Tagovailoa is the real deal. Tua is first in QBR with 82.7 and tied for 5th in touchdown passes. The Dolphins are undefeated when Tua starts. He's proven to be a solid Quaterback who can get his receivers the ball on time and accurate. Both Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle are having career seasons. Tyreek is first in reception's and first in yards. Jaylen Waddle is 5th in receptions as he has made a case to be a top 10 receiver in the league.
One thing we must respect about Tua is his toughness mentally and physically. Mentally Tua has had to face criticism from the media and during his first two seasons in the league Tua was playing for a coach who reportedly did not want him. Due to some growing pains he was pushed in and out of the lineup. Confidence is vital for the development of a young QB and for that too be shaken so early could be detrimental but Tua did not let that shake him or break him down he got a coach in Mike Mcdaniels and put into a system that fit his play style. Tua also faced major injuries in college and the pros. He has suffered a dislocated hip, broken noses and a scary concussion that sidelined him this season for some time. Tua has come back strong every time that's the kind of toughness that superstar players have.
To answer the question of how good is Tua? It's too early to tell he's having an elite season but it takes more than one elite season to be called an elite Quaterback. Do I think Tua is a product of the system and the receivers around him? Yes I do but to a certain extent every Quaterback is. There isn't a QB that could win a Super Bowl without talented weapons but it's the great Quaterback's who elevate the talent around them. Tua has not proven he could do that yet. I believe Tua has played his way to a top ten spot for Quaterback's. His play down the stretch and in the playoffs will determine if he can get closer to that elite top five slot. Tua Tagovailoa is a really good Quaterback on a really good team and he is capable of leading this Dolphins team to the Super Bowl.
